Summer was amazing! Lots of great beach time and playing in the sun. Now it’s time to shed that sun damaged skin and do some repairs.

One of the main objectives of skin repair is exfoliation. This is the process of removing the dead skin cells hence the stimulation of new cells. Skin exfoliation and hydration are key in keeping your skin plump, supple and radiant. This can be done with a chemical peel.

Chemical peels come in many varieties and should be discussed with a skin care provider or specialist especially if you are doing a medical chemical peel. A qualified specialist can look at your skin type to determine what is an appropriate type of peel to do. Peels can help with the following:

· Acne
· Sun damage
· Collagen and elastin stimulation for firmer, more youthful skin
· Fine lines and wrinkles
· Hyperpigmentation
· Reducing size of pores
· Improve the clarity, tone and texture of the skin

How does a chemical peel work?
Chemical peels usually have the ingredient (AHA) alpha hydroxy acid. AHA is applied to the skin. AHA helps dissolve the dead skin cells and the surface, and penetrates into the lower part of the skin resulting in an injury response. This process causes the skin to regenerate new cells. Peels are great to use after the summer months due to all the sun damage that occurs in the hotter months. Basically, it’s like shedding old damage skin and regenerating into fresh new youthful skin. Not all peels are created equally. Medical grade peels administered by a skin professional will be much more effective compared to a at home peel, however its important a professional administer the chemical peel to make the treatment safe and effective.

Is there down time after a chemical peel?
It really depends on the type of peel you receive. At Renew Me Medspa our chemical peels are typically about 2 to 3 days downtimes and that’s due to the exposure of the sun. It’s very important if you go out in the sun in that time frame to wear a least 30 spf sunscreen and re-apply every 2-3 hours.

When will I see results?
This depends on the type of peel you receive. Most people will see some results right after the treatment. The main improvement is typically a couple days after the chemical peel. After the healing response time your body starts collagen and elastin production resulting in more youthful skin.
